The identification comes from elsewhereeither a real or "quasi" experimentand the regression is what you use to clean up the imperfections of the experiment and measure effects. The core methods in today's econometric toolkit are linear regression for statistical control, instrumental variables methods for the analysis of natural experiments, and differences-in-differences methods that exploit policy changes. So far just the sections of it that pertained to things I was working on, which is maybe a third of it.
